'Chat s--t, get banged!'...
I needed to stop the rut after three consecutive defeats, and I was against my boy Jacques, who had some heavy-hitters in his team, so I needed a bit of luck that they would not fire, and I also needed something big from Sadio Mane, as I left him with the captaincy. I decided to not make any transfers this week, as I wanted to have two free transfers next week.
The weeks action started at the Vitality Stadium, where I needed something from Diego Rico as Bournemouth entertained Manchester United. The Cherries were to keep another clean sheet, which was surprisingly their third in a row, which despite United being very poor this season, I was not expecting these points, i must say. The goal was scored by Josh King who I recently let go of, but I was not angry, I mean why would I mind watching United lose?
The 3pm games were eventually fruitful for me, but it was to be an emotional rollercoaster beforehand. Liverpool and Manchester City, were both behind at halftime to Aston Villa and Southampton respectively, but the top two were both to comeback and win 2-1. Liverpool left it really late, as Mane finally scored when he was my FPL captain in the 4th minute of stoppage time, and this was after he had already assisted Andy Robertson's equaliser. Mane missed a good chance when he headed wide in the first half, and Liverpool were also denied a goal by VAR, because apparently Roberto Firmino's armpit, yes armpit!, was offside. That disallowed goal would have been an assist for Mane, add to that, Heaton denied a Mane header in the second half at the near post, with the way the game had gone I thought it was not going to be Liverpool's day, but thankfully I ended up dancing around my living room at about 4.55pm. Mo Salah almost scored but it was saved by Tom Heaton, but other than that he had a quiet game, as his ankle seemed to be bothering him. As I do not play people who are against Liverpool, I left John McGinn on the bench, and he assisted Villa's goal. At the Etihad, Sergio Aguero scored Manchester City's equaliser, and I did not think he would even start, given the way Pep Guardiola has been tinkering, so that was more than welcome. What would have been even better is if City drew however. Danny Ings was not able to get amongst the points, despite the good effort by the Saints, and it may be a short stay for him in his second stint in my team this campaign. Jacques had Raheem Sterling as his captain, and to my joy he did not find the net or assist, which was a rare occurrence due to his form in 2019. This year alone Sterling has 53 goal contributions, which is the most in Europe, two more than the 'Goat' Lionel Messi. Sterling was the most captained man this week, so many FPL players were left disgruntled. This bit of luck is what could bring me the win in gameweek 11.
If Bournemouth's clean sheet was a small surprise, then I was to be really spoilt at Bramall Lane, as John Lundstram scored twice in the first half as Sheffield United beat Burnley 3-0. Lundstram, actually could have got a hat trick as he drove a late chance low and wide, he got 21 points which was phenomenal, but people like me are never satisfied, as we are constantly striving for perfection! 'No, I'm playing of course, well done John!'. He had Lundstram in his side too, so despite being very happy with his unexpected production, we cancelled each other out. In the late game, Watford were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea at Vicarage Road. Callum Hudson-Odoi was on the bench which was good for me, as my opponent had him in his team. Ben Foster, despite not keeping a clean sheet, made a plethora of saves, so got himself two bonus points, as keepers get a point for every three saves that they make. I almost got a welcome shock at the end of the game, as Foster came up for a corner and he almost scored a header, but for a good save by his opposite number Kepa. Foster would have been been top of the bonus points system if that had gone in, added to the saves he had made and salvaging Watford a point, so you can imagine that I almost screamed.
So, Saturday had ended with me 13 points ahead of Jacques, normally I would feel a victory was elementary, but the first game on Sunday between Crystal Palace and Leicester at Selhurst Park, was to be a pivotal game for us both. He had Leicester's Ben Chilwell and James Maddison, whereas I had Youri Tielemens and Jamie Vardy. So I needed Leicester to do well, but not too well, if you get what I'm saying. Stay with me here. I wanted Vardy or Tielemens to score, but for the goal not to be assisted by Maddison or Chilwell, and preferably Leicester not to keep a clean sheet, so Chilwell would not get extra points. 'Read that again if you are confused!'. Leicester, took the lead in the second half through Caglar Soyuncu, and unfortunately it came from a Maddison corner. With Leicester on course for a clean sheet, it was too close to call, it was looking like a draw as Maddison and Chilwell were both going to get bonus points, or worst case scenario I could have even lose it by a point, as the bonus points system kept on changing late on. But, up stepped Vardy to score a 88th minute goal after he was fed by Demarai Gray. I thought it was over with after that, but Leicester wanted more goals and it was well and truly 'squeaky bum time', as Chilwell drove into the box and hit the post, 'phew, victory was mine! (Stewie Griffin voice!)'. This week was too close for comfort, I now have two transfers for my next gameweek, where I play another danger man in Khurram, but it was good to get out of the rut I was in.
