The last gameweek of the season, and I had basically lost all of my passion. With all my concerns on whether Liverpool could win the title or not. Added to that, as I looked around the fantasy leagues that I was in, there was not too much difference that I could make unless I had another spectacular week like the one I had in gameweek 36. Getting a savagely high score was unlikely, as the last day of the season can sometimes be an anomaly. The teams that do not have anything to play for, may make changes, so things can be more complex to call.
All the games kicked off at 3pm on Sunday, as is the tradition. A lot of teams went quite strong with their lineups, considering some of the teams did not necessarily needed. I had made 2 transfers, which means that I was docked 4 points. The first was taking Sergio Aguero out for West Ham's Marko Arnautovic, seeing Aguero score recently had me in a rage, knowing how important the goals are for man City at this crucial point of the season. Arnautovic has looked sharp recently and I was hoping to benefit from this. The other change was bringing in Bournemouth's Callum Wilson for Raul Jimenez. I do not start players when they play against Liverpool, so as I would not have been using any Wolves players, I thought with Bournemouth away at Palace, that Wilson could make an impact.
As Southampton played already relegated Huddersfield, I started with three of their players as I thought they would get a nice home win to end the season. Unfortunately for me (and Saints fans of course), the game finished 1-1. As I had Angus Gunn in goal, and Jan Bednarek in defence, they gave me a minimal points return. The one bright spark for me, was that Nathan Redmond scored a spectacular goal to open the scoring and therefore he got three bonus points to go on top of this goal. Another team I had three active players for, was obviously Liverpool; and these three players I've had basically all season. Liverpool beat Wolves 2-0, but this was not enough to gain them the title. Andy Robertson got his clean sheet points, while Mo Salah got a minimal return with a clean sheet point. I have previously spoke of not making changes at the 11th hour, and this cost me here, as just before 2pm, I changed the captaincy from Sadio Mane to Mo Salah, so it was fate that Mane would get a brace wasn't it. Both players were going for the Golden Boot, and I thought that Salah would be in the mood to fire himself to it, wrong move! Instead, Salah and Mane ended the season on 22 goals along with Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as they shared the topscorer award.
Watford entertained West Ham at Vicarage Road and I thought that, Watford could get a couple of goals, they lost 4-1 however and this meant iI received no points from another late change I made; substituting Aaron Wan Bissaka from Crystal Palace for Watford's Kiko Femenia. Arnautovic, grabbed a goal in this game vindicating my decision to put him into the team. In a surprising result, Leicester drew at home to Chelsea 0-0, which meant that I did not get a significant points contribution from my Leicester pair of Youri Tielemens and Jamie Vardy. The earlier mentioned decision to take out Wan Bisssaka, backfired as though Palace conceded three times, as they neat Bournemouth 5-3, he grabbed a rare assist.
So overall, this weeks points tally was average, if I had not changed my captain, or taken out Wan Bissaka, I would have been looking at 16 more points, but these things do happen. A respectable season for me, as I finished with 2,185 points, which is an average of 57.5 per week. Considering I picked no one from Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea or Man Utd, I am content with my return. Next season, I will try to create a league with a cash reward and if this was not stressful already then next season will be a crazy one!
See you in August!
